Ecological crises, conflict top Taoist forum agenda

Jointly exploring the contemporary value of Taoist thought can provide valuable insights into resolving differences and conflicts, tackling real-world challenges and injecting more positive energy into the peaceful development of the world, participants at an international Taoism forum said.

Taoism, also known as Daoism, is an indigenous philosophical and religious tradition originating in China. Its philosophy has fascinated and inspired people not only in China, but also around the world.

The remarks were made at the 6th International Daoism Forum, being held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, from Wednesday to Saturday. Themed “Cultivating virtue through the Dao, fostering harmony under heaven”, the forum aims to create a platform for exchanges among the global Taoist community and academia, offering intellectual inspiration for peaceful coexistence in today’s world, according to the opening session on Thursday.

Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, sent a congratulatory letter to the forum.

In the letter, Wang said Taoism originated in China and embodies the wisdom of Chinese civilization. The values of striving for goodness and virtue in Taoist culture provide rich cultural resources for promoting social harmony and world peace and have gained widespread recognition.

He said the Chinese government has always supported the Chinese Taoist community in conducting international dialogue and exchanges based on independence, equality, friendship and mutual respect. He also expressed hope that Taoist community members at home and abroad would use the forum as a platform to promote world peace and the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.

Li Guangfu, chairman of the World Federation of Daoism and president of the Daoist Association of China, said that exploring the essence of Taoist cultural thought can provide conceptual support for global development initiatives that emphasize respect for nature and green development. It can also help strengthen the foundational values of peaceful coexistence and harmonious living.

As the largest international cultural exchange platform for Taoists around the world, the forum has attracted participants from more than 40 countries and regions, including Taoist community members, researchers and enthusiasts of Taoist culture.

“Today, people are facing significant changes, with global challenges such as conflicts and divisions, ecological crises and cultural differences emerging one after another. More than ever, human society is in need of wisdom that embraces diversity and inclusivity,” said Vincenzo di Ieso, vice-chairman of the World Federation of Daoism and president of the Daoist association of Italy, on Thursday.

He said the Chinese government’s stance on genuinely safeguarding freedom of religious belief and supporting the healthy transmission of religious traditions is clear. He added that China has also demonstrated openness and commitment to promoting equality, mutual learning and mutual appreciation among different civilizations.
