The other day, online, I stumbled across an image so arresting that I sat and whimpered for about five minutes. You know how some pictures cast a spell? This was one of those – a stunning, mysterious photograph that pulled me in, made me crave to be there for real. Taken at dawn, a haze of greens and tanned gold, it showed the spires of the Buddhist temples in the forests of Mandalay, stretching as far as the eye could see.

Now I’m not, generally, a sucker for travel porn. In fact, I don’t read travel pages any more, on grounds of irrelevance. The concept of chasing the world’s best screensavers hasn’t quite lost its appeal – I can be hijacked by the occasional pictures of…
