MODELS from Tanya Salas’s Tahine’s Creations will be featured in the upcoming Marianas Visitors Authority 4th Annual International Festival of Cultures.
A cultural artist and practitioner, Salas said her models will be representing the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia: Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap.
“The community can look forward to a great show,” Salas said. “Some of these models are returning performers while others are doing it for the first time. They all deserve a lot of credit for stepping out of their comfort zone to represent island cultural beauty.”
Salas said their group is unique because of the creativity and passion that go into the models’ costumes.
“The costumes represent aspects unique to each island but with a twist of modern fashion flavor,” she added.
On Saturday, Salas said they will hold a fundraising event at 6 p.m. at the Surf Club in Chalan Kanoa.
She encourages members of the community to support their cause which is to promote island culture and creative fashion.
“We are a small group, so any amount helps and will go a long way,” she added.
Salas’s business, Tahine’s Creations, is the models’ primary sponsor. “We are open to accepting sponsors in the coming years, and we appreciate all the help we can get,” she said.
On Sept. 21-23, the International Festival of Cultures will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Paseo de Marianas. It will feature live entertainment, ethnic food, arts and crafts, and more.
Also participating are representatives from Palau, the Marshall Islands, Hawaii, Tonga/Fiji/Samoa, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Korea, Japan and Africa.
