Climb La Giralda tower in central Seville

With the summer holidays behind us, you might be tempted to put the last of that vacation fund into a short city break before the nights draw in. Here are some of our favourite destinations to spark your imagination…

Seville, Spain

Whether you want to try flamenco dancing, explore Spain’s Moorish past or simply fill up on great-tasting tapas, the atmospheric capital of AndalucĂa has it all. At its heart, the 104m-high La Giralda tower looms over the city, while the nearby Maria Luisa park is the perfect place to spend an afternoon before settling in for an evening of sangria and tapas.

Verona, Italy

It might be the home of Romeo and Juliet, but you’ll soon fall in love with the city itself when you travel to picturesque Verona. While medieval lanes twist between buzzing piazzas and lazy terrace bars, the real star of the show is the city’s well-preserved Roman amphitheatre, which hosts unforgettable nights of open-air opera during the warm summer months.

Ghent, Belgium

While most visitors to Belgium hit Bruges or Brussels, the charming city of Ghent is the ideal place for a more relaxed slice of Belgian life. Laced with cobbled streets, bustling squares, and tranquil canals, medieval Ghent is perfect for a relaxing few days away. It’s also a great place to grab a late-night Belgian brew thanks to its large and lively student population.

Krakow, Poland

The former royal capital of Poland, Krakow is a carnival of architectural styles that celebrate the city’s prominent role in the history of Central Europe. The city is centred around one of Europe’s largest main squares, now bedecked with chic cafes and bars. Outside the city, the sombre Nazi concentration-camp at Auschwitz makes a harrowingly compelling day trip.

Vienna, Austria

Walk the grandiose streets of central Vienna and you’ll soon appreciate the impressive historical legacy of the Austrian capital. With lavish palaces, immaculate gardens, and even an old-fashioned Ferris wheel, the city charms with every corner turned. And don’t forget to explore the city’s elegant cafĂ© scene, either, with coffee and a slice of local delicacy, Sachertorte.
