A Bishop’s University student died in an accident Saturday in the Dominican Republic, the principal announced in a message to the Sherbrooke university community Sunday afternoon.

Ben Houtman, a Williams School of Business student, was on vacation with several classmates in the Caribbean country, wrote principal Michael Goldbloom.

The university’s dean of student affairs, Stine Linden-Andersen, has travelled to the Dominican Republic “to provide support to Ben’s family and the other Bishop’s students.”

“We know that this tragedy will be deeply felt by many members of our community,” Goldbloom wrote. “Ben was a very thoughtful and positive person with a wide circle of friends. He loved bringing people together and ensuring that no one felt excluded.”

The message went on to say that support and counselling will be provided to anyone who needs it.

“Our hearts go out to Ben’s family and friends,” it concluded.
